Boys’ Choir and Cambiata Voices

The NYCGB Boys’ Choir was formed in 2002 to create a place for trebles and boys with changing voices to sing within the NYCGB organisation. Many will go on to audition for a place in one of the Training Choirs.

The choir repertoire includes music for Cambiata Voices – boys who are in the middle of voice change. At this stage, the pitch range of boys’ voices is often too limited to participate fully in any of the traditional Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass parts. Singing in the Cambiata part allows boys’ voices to settle before entering one of the training choirs.

Boys are allowed to audition from the age of 9 for the Boys' Choir, with membership ceasing when his voice drops comfortably into a lower register, usually between the age of 13 and 15. Our team will offer advice on singing during the voice change, and on auditioning for a Training Choir at the appropriate point. Please contact the office if in doubt: office@nycgb.net.

The Courses

Two courses are held per year; an Easter course involving all the Junior Choirs, and a Summer course just for the Boys' Choir. The courses are run by staff from the NYC organisation.

On courses, members will receive choral training from leading youth choir conductors. Singing lessons and classes in ear training and musicianship will provide a fun learning basis to move up the NYC Ladder.

Voices will be nurtured through the change until they reach an appropriate standard for the National Youth Training Choir.
